Decipher the Smiles of People
We have just seen a few early computer symbols that were expressions of a basic human expression, smile. Then, funky, animated emoticons were created to represent human emotions online. Now, there is a new wave of human expression that is sweeping the net and in its heart lies a simple reason. People want to know what other's think of them. This has led to an explosion of picture rating websites such such as ratemyface, facethejury and the list seems endless. Now there are even websites that target specific ethnic groups. Indeed, the central thread that links all these websites is their evaluation method. Ratings are based on numerical scores like 8/10, 5/5 and so on. The popularity of these sites have brought picture rating to the mainstream and its no longer considered vain or image-obsession to post your image online and seek the ratings of others.
But something is amiss. How can we tell what we think of another person by rating him/her with numbers? Is it so simple and how do you compare a person with a rating of a 5/5 and another with 4/5?
Some might argue that since picture rating itself is a fickle, meaningless and aimless act, there is no need to bother about how people are evaluated. As much as picture rating can be dumbed down as a meaningless and trivial activity, the truth is that picture rating and the feedback that it generates sure does have an impact on the self-esteem, confidence and the thinking of individuals. So, can we create a better evaluating system that provides a better way of providing feedback that is more fun and at the same time meaningful ? The answer is a resounding Yes.
Smikioo is a new web platform where users upload pictures of them smiling and write a short introduction. Others (internet public) view these images and express their perception of the personality behind by the smile by ascribing specific characteristics. We all thin-slice one another in terms of appearance and this method allows for a more holistic and meaningful response. In the eye of the viewer, what thoughts does the smiling face evoke? These thoughts can also be expressed by adding comments to the ratings.
Smikioo being a free website that is not limited to any demographic group, shows the way forward. Human perception is far too complex for it to be deduced through an arbitrary number. In all, Smikioo's simple and intelligent layout coupled with its speed has in fact created a new picture rating site that would allow all of us to see ourselves through other's eyes and make it a fun yet meaningful activity.
